The essay for assignment one is almost finished. Assignment 2 is well on the way.
I've been looking at the different things I might do for the self-portrait, and I really want to represent my views on the world and my home country of Indonesia. I hate that religion is so important that it has to be on our ID cards back home. Why does it have to be there? I'm essentially an agnostic now but that's not allowed in Indonesia. So since this is assignment is to show what we are, I think this is the best way to express myself, with the symbol for agnosticism/atheism.
Now on to the second and third task of assignment 2. Like I said I don't think religion should be important enough to be recognized on IDs. However the socio-political climate back home disagrees. There has been an increasing amount of religious violence lately, all from radicals attacking religious minorities. Not only that. the religious conservative parties are gaining ground in parliament. I want to make a poster and web layout going against this kind of action. One that promotes my country's motto: Unity in Diversity. So with this, I intend to make the main colours of tasks 2 and 3 as red and white, the colours of the Indonesian flag.

Assignment 1 & 2
Apparently assignment 1 and 2 are due on the same day. So yeah, since assignment 2 has 3 different tasks I essentially have 4 assignments to do. An essay, a photo-manipulation portrait, a political poster, and a website of the same political topic as the poster.
The essay, I'm doing on W Eugene Smith, a photographer from the Golden Age of photography who did amazing work and a pioneer of the photo essay. For the photo-manipulation portrait, I want to show my thoughts in machine form. As for the political poster and website, I know definitely I'll do it on the religious radicalism back home in Indonesia.
An obligatory post of a picture below. Its one of W Eugene Smith's photos from his photo-essay on the Minamata disease

AEI: First Post. 1st Assignment thoughts
This year's focus is more on photography than anything else. That and photo-manipulation. So its week 2 now and I'm wondering what I'm gonna do for the 1st assignment: the essay. Our essay is about photography and the people who influenced the medium.
Photography is my hobby, so I want to do it justice. I just don't know what style or who I should write about. Andy Warhol maybe? Or the artistic polaroid style? What about Light photography, which I love to do. Maybe go back to the golden age of photojournalism. So many choices.
